1.​ ​ New features for IRS Online Account registration; process strengthened to ensure privacy, security


A new option in the IRS’s authentication system is now available for taxpayers to sign up for IRS online accounts without the use of any biometric data. This is consistent with the IRS’s commitment to transition away from the requirement for taxpayers creating an IRS online account to provide a selfie to a third-party service to help authenticate their identity. This information is also available in Spanish and Simplified Chinese.

2.​ ​ Tax Time Guide: Use the Where’s My Refund? tool, IRS2Go app to check refund status


Remind your clients that the fastest and easiest way to check on tax refunds is by using the Where’s My Refund? tool on IRS.gov or through the IRS2Go app. This article is also available in Spanish.

3.​ ​ Avoid penalty, interest charges; pay taxes by April 18 deadline

4.​ ​ 2022 Low Income Taxpayer Clinic listing now available


The IRS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) listing for 2022 is now available. IRS Publication 4134, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic List, provides information about LITCs by geographic area, including contact information and details about the languages, in addition to English, in which each LITC offers services. Visit IRS.gov to learn how an LITC can help or how to become an LITC. This article is also available in Simplified Chinese.

The IRS recently updated its frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the Premium Tax Credit. The FAQs provide general information to tax pros and taxpayers. This is also available in Spanish.

6.​ ​ News from the Justice Department’s Tax Division


The United States filed a complaint seeking an order prohibiting John Hugo Eickhoff Jr., Rhonda Kaye Eickhoff, Hoffmann Associates LLC, Aric Elliot Schreiner, Columbia CPA Group LLC, John Williams Gray II and Damon Thomas Eisma from organizing, promoting or selling an allegedly unlawful tax scheme involving the use of charitable remainder annuity trusts (CRATs). The government allegations detail the defendants’ involvement with at least 70 CRATs, in a scheme that has resulted in an estimated $40 million of taxable income going unreported and at least $8 million in tax revenue losses.

7.​ ​ Technical Guidance


Revenue Ruling 2022-05 containing the interest rates: underpayments and overpayments. The rates for interest determined under section 6621 of the code for the calendar quarter beginning April 1, 2022, will be 4% for overpayments (3% in the case of a corporation), 4% for underpayments, and 6% for large corporate underpayments.
